Dream Theater began work on the album in October 2008. Mike Portnoy described the album as a Dream Theater album with "A Change of Seasons", "Octavarium", "Learning to Live", "Pull Me Under", and "The Glass Prison" in one album. Jordan Rudess later explained, "We've been entering into the Gothic domain quite a bit on this album. There's nothing like a really, really powerful and cool choir sound."

Track Listing:

1. A Nightmare to Remember (16:10 sec, John Petrucci)

about car accident petrucci has involved in as a child.

2. A Rite of Passage (8:35 sec, John Petrucci)

is a first single of this album. Concerns about Freemasonry. The Video has been released.

3. Wither (5:25 sec, John Petrucci)

is the sortest song on this album. About Petrucci's fear of writer's block.

4. The Shattered Fortress (12:49 sec, Mike Portnoy)

is final part of Portnoy's 12-step saga.

5. The Best of Times (13:07 sec, Mike Portnoy)

written by Portnoy about his father. Who died from cancer.
“This is a real heavy personal subject about my dad who passed away during the making of this album – he was battling cancer throughout the making of the record. I just wanted to write something that was a tribute to our life together. I didn’t want to focus on something dark and depressing, I didn’t want to focus on the last six months of his life before dying, I wanted to focus on our 41 years together before that. I played the song to him before he died and it meant the world to us to hear that before he died.”, Portnoy said.

6. The Count of Tuscany (19:16 sec, John Petrucci)

about an actual encounter Petrucci had on Tuscany.

This album debuted at #6 at Billboard 200, #1 Billboard Top Internet Albums, and #2 Billboard Top rock Albums. And also in many Chart from many country like Japan, Europe, Australia, ect.
